More complex, because those quality signals now include real-time performance metrics, AI-generated summaries, and richer structured data. Here's where that actually leaves a small business trying to rank — what still works, what's changed, and where to focus first.
Core Web Vitals Are Still King
Google Page Experience signals, including LCP, INP, and CLS, remain core ranking factors. Sites that score well in all three consistently outperform competitors with similar content quality.

For a service business, the clearest way to build this signal is visible authorship (a real name and bio on articles, not an anonymous "admin" byline), genuine case studies or examples rather than generic claims, and content that's honest about limitations rather than overselling — all signals Google's own guidelines explicitly call out as markers of trustworthy content.
AI Overviews and Featured Snippets
Google AI Overviews pull answers from well-structured content. To appear in these, focus on clear heading hierarchies, concise answers to questions, and FAQ schema markup. Structured data has never mattered more for visibility.
The practical writing habit that helps most is answering the actual question a heading poses directly in the first sentence or two beneath it, before adding supporting detail — the same self-contained, quotable structure an AI summary needs to lift a passage cleanly is also just clearer writing for a human reading quickly. Note that Google retired FAQ rich results (the expandable Q&A snippet in search results) for all sites in May 2026, so FAQ schema no longer earns that specific visual result — it's still useful as a genuinely well-structured Q&A format for readers and AI systems, just not as a guaranteed SERP feature anymore.

Sites that skip them aren't usually penalized in some dramatic way; they just quietly underperform sites of similar content quality that got the basics right, which is a much harder problem to diagnose after the fact than to build correctly from the start.
What Doesn't Matter As Much Anymore
It's worth naming a few tactics that used to move the needle and no longer reliably do. Exact-match keyword density — repeating a target phrase a specific number of times on a page — has been a non-factor for years and can now read as unnatural, low-quality writing to both readers and Google's quality systems. Exact-match domain names carry far less automatic ranking weight than they once did; a clear, brandable domain paired with genuinely good content and technical SEO outperforms a keyword-stuffed domain with a mediocre site behind it. And directory submissions to low-quality, unrelated link farms — once a common "SEO service" — do more harm than good today, since Google's link-quality evaluation has gotten considerably better at discounting or penalizing exactly that kind of link profile.
